I've been buying my O1 tool steel off of Amazon, but I've been wanting to try some new steels. And I'm struggling to find a place in Canada (B.C in particular) that has good quality steel for a reasonable price. I'm curious where you guys get all your steel. Thanks in advance everyone!
I’ve had great luck with Lawrence at Maritime knife supply. https://maritimeknifesupply.ca Super nice guy to deal with and ships really quickly, although sometimes you have to wait for stock.
As mentioned above I hear good things about maritime knife supply https://maritimeknifesupply.ca Also, https://www.knifemaker.ca is now based in Brisco BC so that may work out well for you. NJ Steel baron is also an option if ordering large quantities. Shipping is pretty pricey, but they have steel cheaper per foot than the above places, so if you order enough it could work out.
Hey Wuatt. Can’t say enough good things about Maritime Knife Supply and so I echo what has already been said. Also, it seems that knife makers out your way seem to be happy with Lawrence’s shipping rates. Since you’re out that way maybe at knifemaker.ca will be an option, for me it isn’t anymore, the shipping quite often costs as much if not more than the product I have in my cart I also got steel from Alph Knife Supply in the U.S. But, alas, again shipping has gone absolutely insane! Put it this way an order I placed two years ago, I paid $50.00 shipping ...for ‘s and giggles, I duplicated that order and the shipping jumped to $150.00 this year. So anyway I think my point is I hope guys here continue to support Maritime Knife Supply, because it’s as good as it gets this side of the border for steel! And I’ve said this before because occasionally I like to rant, but how in the (insert expletive) can Canada be the #1 supplier of steel to the U.S and we can’t get steel at a good price? Absolutely ridiculous. Some honourable mentions Our very @John Noon who sells a wonderful array of knife making supplies over at https://canadian-artisan.com/noons-knives/ I believe has some steel. And Mike Mossington of https://mossingtonknives.com/ I think also still sells steel. But be prepared to phone or email him though as his website is stuck in 1998 haha!
I must have been asleep or something - when did Knifemaker.ca move to BC? I notice the contact is also now Curtis. Did Rob and Marilyn sell? If there was an announcement on the site I can't find it but I'm not on facebook so maybe there was something there? Sorry - just used my wife's facebook account (always a dangerous thing) to check and I see the notice there in a Nov 21, 2020 post. Looks like Rob and Marilyn are still involved but expanding staff. Wonder how that's going to affect shipping. They were my main steel suppliers but have to admit I haven't ordered in a while.
I believe Rob is still doing the heat treating service out of Sundre. https://heattreat.ca/ Found this on Instagram today: Knifemaker Direct https://knifemakerdirect.ca/collections/carbon-steel Dan
Always good to have more suppliers. I see they have S90V, ive been interested in giving that steel a try. Has anyone here ever used it?
The direct guy followed all of my followers on Instagram. I had customers messaging me. He added my personal account by mistake and I asked him about it. He didn't see anything wrong with it or tapping in on knifemaker's brand. Lawrence Lake http://maritimeknifesupply.com/
My go to is alpha. I'm fortunate enough to live next to the boarder so I can run across to pick it up. If you order from the states make sure they ship via USPS. The regular couriers will double you shipping cost with brokerage. In regards to alpha their shipping to Canada seems to start at $75. I just keep adding to my order till it jumps to $150 and then remove something to get back down to $75. I just started using maritime and they are AWSOME!!! Great prices and insanely fast shipping. They are my new go to.
As we discussed earlier, it's true that I used your page as one resource to discover Canadian knifemakers. At the time I honestly didn't consider it to be an ethical issue. It was my mistake to use your follower list to save me time in my search, instead of using only the suggested, discover or advertising features. I can now see how this is very upsetting for you, and I would like to make amends. I will message you to discuss.
Late last year the USPS and others essentially doubled their rates and the cost of working around Covid has been cited as part of the cause.
I get most of my steel from Jason Thompson located in BC. https://thompsonmetals.ca/ or Lawrence Lake located in the east coast Nova Scotia. https://maritimeknifesupply.ca/
