Hey all I recently was able to pick up a baldor 2x48 belt grinder. It has a 1.5 hp motor that can be run off 110 or 220. My shop only has 110 service. I know nothing about vfd's would I be able to get one for this machine? Would love to be able to dial back the speed on this beast lol

    Jason,

VFDs drive 3 phase motors and your single phase Baldor isn't going to like a VFD driving it. But there are alternatives...

Sometimes you have 240V and you don't know it. One circuit can be wired off of one 120V and another off the opposing 120V. The difference between them is 240V. I grabbed two extension cords and a voltmeter and kept plugging the cords into different receptacles around the shop and found 240V that way. If you have two opposite 120Vs in your shop you can make 240 easily enough. Then you'd be looking for a TEFC 3 phase motor and a small VFD. Three phase motors can be had pretty cheaply as they are not much use for them without a drive, or unless you live in an industrial park and have 3 phase at your house. :) My motor was $35 on Kijiji and my 3HP drive was around $220 new.

If you do in fact have only one 120V hot in the shop, I am thinking some step pulleys is the best way to go.

    Hope this helps.

    Dan

Thanks for the info dancom. Since my grinder is direct drive, sounds like I'll just have to learn to grind at warp speed.
