I have a good friend who is opening a barber shop in PEI, and I want to give him a gift for opening day(may-june). So I want to make him a straight razor. He told me once that if I made him one he would use it once on himself and then put it on display. He doesn't know I'm doing this, and I'd like to do a good job. Anyone have some tutorial material? Cheers
Got an hour? I went looking just the other day after reading the cover feature in February's Blade magazine on straight razors. Dan
I hope to find an hour. Lol. Looks like an interesting video. I've been wanting to make a straight razor but I keep putting it off.
Sweet, I will be watching this. Would be an idea for a kith couldn't it? Maybe something that a lot of makers don't make. Just an idea. Thanks Dan
Getting at the drawing board for a straight razor, and I'm curious.. How thick are razors generally? 1/8" +/-?
I might be a little late for this, but a 1/8" spine will not work for a straight. Generally accepted geometry for a straight is a width:spine ratio of 4:1 - 3.5:1, measured from the contact point on the spine. The more common widths for straights are 1/4" and 3/16". with 1/4" you could make a razor up to 8/8" and keep proper geometry, and 6/8" for 3/16".
Charlie Lewis' vids are definitely worth the time to watch. He has some shorter ones, I referenced them frequently during my build.
I did end up finding the hour a while back. It was an hour well spent. Now i have to find the time to get back to making some knives. Lol
I watched this too. I like the paced presentation. I also like the detailed voice-over. Although he doesn't specify the thickness of the original stock, it appears to be about 3/16". This would concur with the ratio metrics provided by jonliss, and an 8" contact wheel.
I've watched I think all of his videos, theyre worth the time for sure. I watch knife making videos on my phone in bed to fall asleep., my girlfriend hates it because all she hears on her side is PING PING PING PING PING Where in PEI are you Snailgixxer? I'm heading over for a visit this summer
I didn't even notice your comment here Mark. I'm from the western end, community is called Cascumpec. I'm an Alberta resident(for now). I was home in August and will be back over the holidays in a few weeks. I too watch videos to go to sleep, I wear headphones though so my girlfriend doesn't get annoyed lol
No problem buddy, I havnt really been around here much anyway. I was born in Summerside, have some family in Wellington and Charlottetown still kicking around there. How'd you make out with the razor, you get it done? I did a few small fixed blades with apparently bad geometry haha I'm working on a 7/8 x 1/4 thick right now. Hoping to heat treat tomorrow!
