Has anyone ever checked out Standen Springs in Calgary as a source for steel? I emailed them a few years back, but never actually got a chance to check the place out. Now I'm not really sure if $2.50 a pound is a good price or not, but if your ever in the area and you want 5160, they seemed more than happy to help out. Here's the email I got back from them... Randy- The steel we stock is 5160, and it is available in raw form. The sizes on it are kind of strange as spring steel doesn’t follow traditional steel thicknesses. It is available in .262, .291. .323, .360, .401 thick, in widths from 1 ¾” wide to 4” wide. Most of the sizes are in stock. We sometimes have some .237 x 1 ¾” as well. Let me know what lengths you need and I can get pricing and availability for you. It typically runs at $2.50 a pound in raw form. Manager, Parts & Service 403-258-7800, 1-800-663-7800
I would like to follow up on this, the Standens is about 10 minutes away from my house and it would be great to have a reliable place to get steel. Up until now I've been buying from knifemaker.ca or 01 Tool steel from Metal supermarket. Both are decent but shipping isn't great, and 01 is a bit pricy. I will let you know what I find out. James.
I have used there springs before it's good stuff. The biggest headache is breaking the stock down to a usable size
I have a really nice guy in the sales department who is going to look for off cuts (12 inch long pieces) for me. I don't yet know the price but they are more than willing to sell these to me. I will let you all know how much they are when I talk to him tomorrow. Cheers, James.

Hello All, Well, I talked again to Standens, really great to work with and I now have in my possession 5 sections of 1/4 x 3" x 4' 5160. They were $30 each and the guys at Standens were great to work with. I would have no issues at all heading down there again, given how quickly I am making knives it may be a long time before I need more 5140 though. If anyone needs any more info just let me know. Cheers,
Hi Lewis, I actually don't know if they ship steel, I went directly to the factory here in Calgary and bought it over the counter. I would think that given the weight and size of this steel the shipping may cost more than the material. Where are you located? James.
I would give the Standens service counter a call they were good to work with. They may have a courier that heads out your way to deliver to repair shops etc. You might be able to add something to a shipment. https://service.standens.com/
