This was my first attempt at a San Mai/Brute de Forge blade and I am pleased with the results.

Definitely liking this one Joe. I love the burl. What were your steel choices for the san mai? There's a marked transition there. Cool.

I thought I'd try materials I was familiar with. 15N20 on the outside and 1080 on the inside. Usually when we make Damascus the starting billet has even layers. I just put all the 15N20 on the outside and the 1080 on the inside. Etching is whatever contrast you desire. I polished this one after etching.

Beautiful! I really like this laminated steel. For some reason it appeals to me even better that Damascus...

I am with Roman, Damascus at one time was pretty impressive but it seems to get over done now. A simple San Mai blade seems more elegant, beauty in simplicity

Right on, thanks Joe. I was curious because I've been thinking about 318 stainless over 1084 core.

Dan- I've also been chewing on the stainless over carbon idea. This just seemed like it was going to work with little difficulty. Baby steps.
