Some More Honesuki

    Here's a 160 mm honesuki made from AEB-L and African blackwood. The bolsters are brass with copper and brass mokume gane and jade acrylester accents.

    Another right-handed honesuki made from the same KN85 pattern this time AEB-L and desert ironwood. Bolster and butt are stainless with brass accent spacers which go well with the rich ironwood tones.

    The construction of these knives is in such a way that the butt is screwed on and the screw is fitted into the tang. This all happens inside the handle so it's in a way hidden and through at the same time.

    It's some copper/brass mokume gane I made quite a few years ago. Finally found a use for a piece. :)

    Love that profile! The honsuki design looks very versatile. It seems more like a kitchen utility knife than just a boning knife.

    This design has proved to be popular. Its slant and 2" deep blade makes it more like a chef's knife. Certainly won't bang your knuckles. Yet it is not as long as a proper cheffy. I make them so the balance point is at the middle finger in the pinch-grip. These feel completely different than a full tang version. The metals at the front bolster give a little heft for a quality feel and the mass at the butt end allows one to rock the knife on the balance point. It's not conveyed in the photos, but the front bolster is quite thinned out to about 16 mm (5/8"). Super nice to work with. I wouldn't mind one for myself one day.
