This knife was a part of the Saskatchewan Knifemakers Guild collaboration knife builds. If some people don't remember this it's because the collaborations were given out quite a while ago (a long while ago) and with my limited making prospects up here it's been a very slow progression in getting the knife from the blade blank as it was handed out, to the finished product. I wanted to finish the knife with Caribou antler and leather washers to make the knife more user friendly in the cold weather that we have in the North (nothing worse than freezing your hands on a metal bolster or exposed tang when you're out at -30 or colder). The Old Man sharpened it up the other day and tells me that it's the sharpest thing that he's had in his hands. I just need to get a chance to get out and do some cutting with it to see how it holds up. It should be on the show and tell table at an upcoming Guild meeting. Without further ado, here are the results of about 2 years of off and on knifemaking. Hope it meets with your approval.
Sorry it's a crap photo. I only had the iPod at the time. When Mom gets back from France I'll get her to snap some good photos under better light.
It exceeds approval and looks great! I was never very turned on by stacked leather, maby because the only ones I've seen were the fake cheap production ones, but this knife and the others I've been seeing here are giving me the itch to try it out. I wish I didn't live so far away so that I could make it to some of these meetings and shows.
Once I had finished buffing it on the wheel with red buffing compound I used Permashine on both the antler and the leather. Slather it on and let it set up then buff it off with the clean wheel. Seals up the pores nicely and gives a nice hard shine. The only problem is that you see any scratches you left which sends you back to the grinder to take the scratches off. All in all it was lots of fun.
Excellent work!!! I'm not a huge fan of stacked leather either but the way you have it laid out with the collaboration instead of full stacked looks very sharp!!! I like it
