So I have to admit, I find the look of a Kydex sheath a bit off-putting. Most of them seem much larger than the knife with the grommets etc. Now I do appreciate the form fitting aspect and I suspect the ease of use although I haven't done one yet. But am I missing something? Are there styles that this suits better? I'm just not loving the look (and I know I don't have to use it if I don't like it). Is there a way to secure the seams without the grommets for a sleaker look?
We are pretty much on the same page. I am about 95% team leather.lol BUT I do also feel Kydex has its place. I think a tactical knife for the most part matches better with a kydex sheath. In the end it is personal preference.
I am a leather sheath person but have tried a couple Kydex sheaths and I have to say for the fillet knives you can't beat it; 1) fast to make 2) price of materials ? 3) water proof 4) easily cleaned as far as looks I prefer the leather sheath even after making a Kydex sheath for a beast of a knife which suits it I still feel a textured black sheath would be better. I have used Kydex for making a sleeve for a couple knives, no belt loops or fancy hardware. Simply a way to protect the knife in storage, just have to figure out a good Kydex loop design that will actually last in use.
Kydex is not for everyone I guess like we say each is own . I'm one that like it and use it 99% of the time . Sure for a fancy knife leather is the way to go. But for a working knife I like kydex . It's fast and easy to work with and your knife stays clipped in but the knife still can removed with one hand . I put leather belt loops on mine like like the knife to hang down on your belt . I don't like them plastic clips and your case high on your belt .
Long before I decided to make knives I have had a love for kydex. Guns, knifes and anything, it's great. Wash blood off it with easy and it does not care if it gets wet. I find they are more so slim as it's .08" wall and lack of ugly straps. But each to their own really
So back to my question from the start. Can you do it without the grommets? They seem to be what make the sheath so much larger than the blade.
look at my profile pic. I have the eyelets as well but had these black small machine screws and black nuts that I thought looked cool on it so in the end it allowed me to cut closer for a sleeker look I'll try to add a pic in a min
now I'm no expert and this was my first sheath I've ever made but as you can see you could chock up on the bolts a bit more. I used red lock tite on the nuts too
No problem each individual will have their own taste so if find out what they like it may make it easier and price will be more with a leather sheath if are selling or for a friend either way haha
I like the kydex wrapped in leather sheaths I am seeing. Seems the best of both worlds, the form fit of kydex and the nicer look of leather. I've only made one knife, but the sheath I want to make for it is (if I have it right) a, 'Scout Carry,' style.
