I started working on the Blades I forged during the SSHI at the beginning of the month. From the left; three are based off of Dan's DH31 (left most wasn't forged but ground from barstock using some of the nice equipment that was graciously provided during the HI), the 4th is going to resemble a DH1 (Dan's again), the 5th is a little experiment in wildlife scalpels (for de-breasting birds), the 6th is going to be a sorta puukko, the 7th is going to be a hidden tang hunter. All are 5160 that was forged down from 3/8" to around 1/4" (using Cal's rolling mill at the HI). The DH31s were forged into shape and are now around 1/8" thick, the DH1 is pretty close to the 1/4", the two hidden tangs are around 1/4", the scalpel is 1/8" and will likely warp during heat treat as I started finishing the bevels before realizing how thin it was.
Wow that's an awesome line up! You've got a little finishing work to do, but that's the best part. Love the "wildlife scalpel."
Those are some nice looking profiles. I hope you're going to post some pics of the final piecies once they're finished. I always love those before and after shots! Jim T
I really like the profile of the 4th from the left.. Right before the wildlife scalpel. I picture it having a flat grind, some type of bone handle with stainless bolster. Looks like you had a good time at the HI
Been a busy summer, but here is the first of 7 that are completed from the 2015 hammer in. Blade is 5160 flat grind with a 30deg micro bevel on the edge. Handle is black and yellow micarta that I got from knifemaker.ca. I hope to make a light box so I can take some better pictures. Likely I'll finish the sheath before I commit to the light box. Have a good weekend.
Looks nice and slicy! Is this the blank on the far left in the previously posted photo? I am trying to gauge the size. P.S. I found something that looks like the scalpel. Google "wusthoff cheese knife" and look at some images.
