I have been using this old knife for kindling for many years, an old friend gave it to me. I’m changing the broken plastic handle And maybe buff the steel up a bit. My new grinder and steel should be here this week
Personally, I just give it a quick wipe and then pop it in the oven. I don't know that it matters much. There will be more gunk cooked on after taking it from the oven if it's not completely clean first but it sands off really easily so I never really bothered. I wouldn't waste too much time sanding it first but others may disagree for reasons i don't know. I think it's really just about getting most of the oil off so you don't smoke yourself out. I think the biggest deciding factor is are you using a dedicated toaster oven for heat treat, a kiln/forge etc or just the kitchen oven in your house. Some wives don't like you baking knives in the kitchen for some reason. I mean really, it's your oven too right? I mean usually I'm nice enough to let her use it all the time, I only wanted to use it once or twice.
