Does anyone in the Toronto area know of a good metal supplier? I have called and emailed a lot of places and so far haven't found anyone that carries carbon steel higher than 1045. I'm looking for 1084 and W-2 (for in the future because I want to learn how to do hamons). I know that Canadian Knifemaker Supplies carries 1084 and other good stuff and I will order from them if I need to but I was hoping to find someone locale. Cheers Joel
You could try Aldo Bruno at NewjerseySteelBaron. He is across the border but Jersey isnt that far off. He has good selection and good prices. His 1084 is some of the most consistant and highest quality around as far as all reviews go, I believe he is out of W2 right now, since he got a batch that he didnt feel was consistant to his standards. All of his products and customer service have been highly praised. Might be worth a look.
You can also try the steel store. I think there is one in Pickering and Brampton. Check out the yellow pages under tool steel or something like that. There should be quite a few steel suppliers in the GTA
Thanks I'll give them a call. I've tried about 8 different places and haven't had any luck yet. I'll let you know if I do. Cheers Joel
I've checked around alot too with no luck for W2 or workable sizes of 1095. There are places to get W1 in the form of drill rod, as I've learned here from another member on the forum. I ended up starting out with a bunch of 5160. Contacted a local automotive spring shop and they were good enough to check with their supplier and find out it is 5160 and not something else. I've been looking to buy through Aldo for a while, just waiting until I have a trip state side or feel like paying the shipping costs. I'll be watching your thread to see if you find anything else in the area.
So to all those who live and make stuff in the GTA, I think that I have found a supplier of 1084, 1095, 5160 and W-2. None of them are listed on their website but I have been emailing every metal supplier I've found online and finally got a "Yes, we do" answer. They also seem to carry all the same stuff that the Metal Supermarket does, but if they carry these other metals and its quality then I will be very happy. I have asked for a quote on all a bunch of pieces and if they come back with good results then i will share/post all the info I have on them. If I don't get what I'm looking for then now big deal because I know there is Canadian Knifemaking Supply out west and the steel baron in Jersey. I have nothing against ordering from a far and I don't mind waiting for an order to come in, but I like local suppliers because it's fun to go an look at their stock, you sometimes find something your didn't know you were looking for.
Well I hope this works out. I would love to be able to by local. And in those types of metal too. What sort of sizes are they quoting you on? And flat or drill rod for the w-2
So it wasn't great but not a total bust either. The place I found is Mckinnon Metals in Rexdale. They could get 1084 and 1095 but no W-2 or 5160. Everything I asked them to quote on was flat stock @ 1 1/2" - 2" wide bectween 1/8" and 3/16" thick. They were more than double the prices of Canadian Knifemaker Supplies and delivery was 7-10 days. So I'll keep looking though but in the mean time I'm going to place an order with CKS because I'm running out of files.
I have a ton of new saw blade material in 1/8 and 3/16 thickness and it makes great knives with beautiful hamons.Anyone interested call me at 807 -935-2383.thanks;tmr.
