Has anyone tried modifying a log splitter to use for a press? How about a smaller 6 tonne electric one? I've been considering picking up one (to split wood) and I was wondering if it could be coaxed into double duty. If you aren't familiar with the concept, here's a video from the Mad Dwarf Workshop guys showing a larger gas-powered one in action. Who made the rules of what a press has to look like? If it works, why not & if it can pull double duty at least it's easier to rationalize the purchase with the wife ( also known as the minister of finance around our house )
I don't know why it wouldn't work unless it was too slow. I was just talking to the Old Man last night about building an air hammer as I acquired a few large ball bearings that are proving to be a real bugger to forge by hand. But this could work well if the ram travels reasonably quickly and there is the potential to quickly reverse the up and down motion (no requirement for the ram to travel up the full distance of the stroke before tripping a switch to allow it to press down again).
