I was wondering where you get your leathercraft things from. Tandy seems to be the pony in town. Also, they have only "Eco-Flo" dyes. Are these any good? I have some old Tandy dye that I really like, but is probably banned in the first world nowadays. Hey you never know. There may be a gem of a supplier out there in Spuzzum or Mushaboom. Dan
My mistake, I found Fiebings on the Tandy web site.I had to search for it by name. (Rob, I grew up in BC. As kids we used to laugh every time we drove through Spuzzum.) Dan
hahaha , where abouts in BC did you live ? Did Young call you about your seal stamp ? we had a good laugh !!
White Rock/South Surrey. Spent a lot of summers camping and fishing up in Hope-Princeton area, Manning Park etc. Nothin' beats walking rocky streams all day catching rainbows with a fly rod.
interesting I spent 26 years in Ladner before moving up to the Interior.......my fishing was a little different......growing up in Ladner as teen you usually worked on a gillnetter , loved it , miss the ocean !!
Hi Don, Roys shoe repair on Ellis in town is suppose to be a Tandy outlet but he is very limited........I usually buy a box of goodies From Tandy in Slurrey when I head to the coast or if inlaws are coming this way...........you can order on line from any Tandy dealer via credit card , hope this helps........
I just ordered some dyes, black sinew and a basketweave stamp online. $13 for shipping & handling. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.ca
Don, it never hurts to ask around. I put an ad on Kijiji asking for leathercraft stuff. Two people contacted me and I scored big on both calls, including a pile of tanned leather. People have these those Tandy kits in their closets from the 1970's, and like their Karate uniform, guitar and ham radio, they are sitting there in the dark. Good luck! Dan
you can be added to Tandys email list and mailing list , they always have sales on everything from time to time..............
ok thanks guys , now to figure out what tools in need to make a sheath .and what types of leather and thickness
Don, I have a very basic sheath tutorial on my blog. http://dcknives.blogspot.ca/p/blog-page_4.html I used very basic tools and made my own stamp from a hunk of stainless rod. It's more about making it fit the knife. I am certainly not an expert by any means, but if you have any questions about what I did, let me know. Dan
Dan I think we first met when you started posting your templates that most knifemakers are always on the hunt for......and always looking for something different to try.......you were applauded by many on other forums for sharing ...........variety is the key I think for sparking interest in broadening the makers portfolio of knife patterns and templates.......good on ya Dan !! I'v have borrowed a couple myself , will let you know when...........
Thanks Rob. Ya, when I started down this slippery road I thought knifemaking was pretty much about grinding chunks of steel into cool shapes. As I go, I am learning it is about art, metallurgy, carpentry, geometry, chemistry, leather-working, photography and so much more. And there's a department store of skills that can be honed. But at the end of all this, there is something you can hold in your hand that's useful, beautiful and durable. Why wasn't I doing this 20 years ago? Dan
speaking of leather if your on the Tandy email list you would have received their April leather sale's flyer today.............
