Spent some time looking for leather making items for making sheaths today. Looks like Tandy leather has a lot of options. But to stitch a sheath together what do I actually need? There are tool kits, deluxe tool kits, super deluxe tool kits, extra stuff for your tool kit and of course single tools. I know I need leather, I assume a big arse needle and some thread. Anything else ?
Package of needles and good heavy thread , I prefer waxed varieties. Thread spacer punch set or stitching layout wheel. Awl is handy but a tiny drill bit is faster as long as you get the far side nice and straight. Polished bone or antler for smoothing edges. Assorted dyes and edge finishing paste For stamps a collection of background shaders and bevellers are a good start Can post more once on the computer
This set covers the basics pretty well https://www.tandyleather.ca/en/product/deluxe-handstitching-set I stopped using the stitching tool long ago and stick with the two needle method. For the record I get stuff at better prices than web site lists as "Your Price" or full retail.
Thanks John. Where do you find your deals on leather? Tandy was the first place I came across that seemed to have decent items and I think is Canadian.
I use https://www.tandyleather.ca/en/store-locator they are in Winnipeg for me and still take three to five days to get an order. First order I place they gave me gold membership a year later platinum LOL I really spend to much there but slowly finding where to buy things like eyelets and studs from and only hurdle is the minimums of 2 to 10 thousand each for small stuff or 500 Kg minimum by weight for handle materials.
