I decided to make a seax. I am using metal from a leaf spring (5160) and I'm actually going to make 2 in case I screw one up along the way. If I manage to make 2 good one's, one will be for the KITH and the other a Christmas present for my brother. So here they are so far, I've cut out and shaped the blade and still need to finish shaping the tang. [/IMG] I'll keep up dating as I keep making progress.
Looking good so far. Did you manage to find some new 5160? I'm going t be doing a seax as well. But I'm doing my test from a file then going from there
Not new, and I'm not 100% it is 5160 and after reading more and more about leaf springs, it turns out it's probably not 5160 I have and am using. I got it used, but the guy at the auto wreckers said it probably was but now that I read more and more about it, I'm probably wrong for thinking it, although maybe he did know what he was talking about. Next time I buy some I'll get it from your guy Ryan so that I know for sure. But for now I'll make a few extras and do a lot of testing with hardening and tempering.
It should be useful whatever the actual make up. It has to have that medium to high carbon content to at least be used as a spring. Good luck with it looking forward to seeing more.
So I haven't posted on my KITH in a long time but I have been working on it little by little. Yesterday I was able to get the heat treat done and now I have to sand it down and start on the handle. I edge quenched it using the "goop" method from the "$50 knife shop", so I'm hoping it works as well as it did for my first few blades. Here are some pics to show that I'm actually making progress. This is the first pic that's gone, profile cut out. [/IMG] Here's it ground down and ready for heat treat. [/IMG] and here it is post heat treat, ready to be sanded again. [/IMG] I'd like to apologize to whomever is going to get this because of the lateness but I've been insanely busy at work and getting ready for baby #2. Which is arriving any day now. If it's decided that I shouldn't be in the KITH because of the lateness I'll understand but I really didn't want to go back on my word of saying that I'd make one. Regardless I'm going to finish this because it is a lot of fun.
It seems that a lot of us are in the same boat for the deadline. But by the looks of it we are all near the point in the finishing process. Nice looking blade there. How long is it?
So i'm actually not sure if the Viking KITH is still going on or if it was cancelled but I'm still working on my......very slowly. I have only had about 2-3 hours of shop time to work on projects in the last month or so because of work, holiday activities and family life taking up so much time (3 yr old daughter, 2 week old daughter and my wife was sick after the birth, she's better now), but I managed to get some progress made. [/IMG] [/IMG] I got the handle, white oak, fitted and roughed out and the brass bolster fitted and roughed out. I'm going to work on getting the blade completely done, next chance I get. Just a bit more sanding, then I'm going to sharpen and test it out. Even if the KITH is officially over, I'm still going to complete this because I'm learning so much. Ryan, I'm sorry I completely missed your post until now, the blade is just over 6 1/2" in length.
Looking pretty sweet....Mines done as well so I hope it isn't cancelled it is still sitting in my knife cabinet waiting for a new home
I'm also still in. I've been practicing/experimenting with stuff I haven't done before and I didn't want to do it on the Kith knife just incase I scrap a blade.
