Being that we're expected to be in the deep freeze for the next week, I am setting my sights on designing a 2 x 72" horizontal belt grinder. I was thinking of incorporating a small wheel holder and a 4" rubber contact wheel. It might be handy to have a section of flat platen. I'd like to keep the design simple enough for anyone to build with basic tools, disc grinder, drill press etc. Maybe a smaller 120 V motor so it can be plugged in anywhere. What features would you like to see on a stationary horizontal belt grinder? If you already have one, what things do you like or dislike about it? I know I have a decent tilting grinder in the shop already, but swapping tool arms, tilting and re-adjusting work rests and so on is so time consuming! Dan P.S. My Christmas present arrived yesterday. A 50 Amp plasma cutter with pilot. I'll be playing with it soon and will let you know how it goes.
I am still trying to figure out if I really need one. Although a vertical flat work surface has dome up on occasion
I agree that a horizontal grinder with small wheel attachment and a flat platen would be wonderful. the biggest thing id like is that the rests for each section be able to be moved up and down the whole width of the 2" belt. I have a Hardcore grinder where the rest will move up and down a bit but it is to much time to loosen set screws and adjust up and down. Doesnt take long to wear out one small section of the belt.
Hi Jim, This makes sense. When profiling, that 1/8" or so will always be on the same place on the belt just above the work rest. Dusting off the CAD program now. Dan
I built a dinky 1x42” horizontal grinder before I really had much interest in knife making. I couldn’t go without now, and have been thinking about building a new 2x72 that can flop over to horizontal.
DG, I made this 2" x 72" back in 2017. Files available no charge. https://canadianknifemaker.ca/index.php?threads/new-2-x-72-grinder-build.2791/page-4#post-22454 I'd recommend sourcing your motor first, then you'll know how the mounting/clearance will go. Cheers, Dan
