Hi everyone, my name is Jeff and I'm trying my hand at making knives. I have always liked making things but have stuck to woodworking. I enjoy hunting, fishing and I have always loved knives. I have quite a few, although none of them are of spectacular quality. My wife had a very abused Buck Omni Hunter (she worked for the soil survey and basically used as a trowel), I set about refurbishing it. Sanded it down and decided to put a wood handle on it. Doing that got me looking at how I could make my own knives and I discovered stock removal. I am currently working on my first two knives, with the intention of making them gifts for my two brothers who are getting married. I am making them out of O1 using an angle grinder, hand held belt sander, filing jig and coffee can forge I made. One is just about ready to have the handle put on. Have been lurking around here and a couple of the other forums for awhile learning methods of how to do things. This forum seems like a very positive place and I look forward to talking to you guys. Hopefully I'll have my first knife done soon, started in May and it seems like it has been slow going. Also interested in making "custom" hatchets by taking old no name axe heads I find without handle and reworking and rehandling them.
Welcome to the forum. We're glad to have you. Sounds like you're well underway in this madness. I like your idea of recycling old hatchets and giving them new life. I'm looking forward to seeing some them.
I live in Neepawa. So not very far from you. That's pretty cool, didn't think there would be anyone close doing this kind of thing.
supposed to be another maker in Brandon but I have never met him and another old part time maker in Carberry I think it was
Welcome! Glad to have another person to ask questions : ) I started with a coffee can forge and an angle grinder too. I built a grinder using Dan's plan pretty quickly though. I was bad with an angle grinder. If you haven't check his site out yet - go there now http://dcknives.blogspot.ca. Also, John Noon's. https://noonsknives.blogspot.ca between those two sites and all the help you'll get here, you won't need youtube anymore.
I did some consulting work years ago at the potato plant in Carberry. Installed an inventory tracking system. Between Brandon and Carberry, I had a lot of fun. Ate some incredible perogies and cabbage rolls there too. Best i've ever had.
Hi guys! Happy to find this Manitoba post. I'm in Winnipeg and know one other knifemaker, although he only does stock removal. It's great to see that I am not alone in this part of the country who enjoys knifemaking. I look forward to meeting up with some of you to talk about the whole process and talking shop. ....Actually, I met another guy a couple weeks ago that is building a shop near Niverville. Signy Rose Steel. I post some stuff under @huskprods or @huskproductions on instagram. If you can access this photo. Dagger, burl handle, brass guard and pommel. It is a shelf piece because I am scared of it...Too many cutting edges and sharp as F.
Don't suppose anyone here has a good spot in the city for finding material for Damascus steel? Looking high and low for 1085 and 15N20 and coming up short at every turn
Jesse Baxter, I've looked a little bit and I wasn't able to find much for tool steel within the city. If you find a good source, I'd like to know too. Metal Depot did have a few pieces of knife making metal but I don't recall what it was...other than expensive!
There was a There's a guy from Saskatchewan who has hundreds of pounds of 15N20 he's selling for cheap but wants to sell it at 40lbs at a time plus shipping so easy 400$. I'm ordering off alphaknifesupply.com right now. Shipping is higher than id like but material is cheap. I'll post again when it arrives to let you know the quality
