hey guys not sure if this is the right spot for this but it still falls under heat treating. well i tried to do a hamon on a bowie im working on right now and not sure why it turned out the way it did.I mean its there but not quite.so heres the process i did. -normalized my 1095 steel 3 times. -coated it with w.h. harvey furnace cement and let it dry for 4hrs. and some spots were still wet under the skin it formed - heated the steel up slowly so i didnt overheat the the tip and brought it up to non magnetic. - and quenched it conola oil that was preheated to 125 deg. reground my blade to clean it up and etched with muriatic acid, diluted 2 to 1 so with that said why isnt my hamon more pronounced especially with that distinct 1/16 black line that runs down the hamon? theres so many variables that im not sure where to start changing my process. thanks!
thanks dancom! I wet sanded it up to 800x. I also did a very light wet sand with 3n1 oil and 3000 just to try and get rid of some of the marks left after etching which i dont understand why they are there. Ive also noticed that my hamon slightly disappears after wet sanding a lttle bit. just wondering what people are doing to finish there blades after acid etching?
Okay I cannot resist any longer, every time I read Hamon I think post this picture with a dozen question marks
