Hello I’ve been thinking about pulling the trigger on a 2x72 with a vfd but was looking at the 1hp and the 1.5 hp 3 phase motors. My question is if anyone out there runs there’s on a 1 hp motor do you have any issues with it bogging down when running some of the surface conditioning belts?
I usually run surface conditioning belts slow as they get things hot pretty quickly at high speeds, so you shouldn't have any issues with those on a 1hp. The only time I bog down my 1.5hp is at max speed with a 36g belt grinding bevels, usually only when I'm pushing too hard. If you use a reasonable pressure a 1.5hp is fine and I assume a 1hp would be fine too, although I don't have experience with one. My 1.5hp is also direct drive, if you run a pulley system you lose a bit of power. If you're running on 110V then the 1hp should be fine. If you're running on 220V then you might as well go for 2hp since it's not much more expensive.
Some day I need a proper setup (currently running a treadmill motor) but my understanding is that using VFD with a 3 Phase motor will cost you 1/3rd of the power. Given that, you may want to spring for the 1.5HP. Either that or run the 1hp. If it isn't enough, use the motor for a disk grinder and change to a 1.5.
I forgot to mention, as far as I'm aware, you cant run 1.5hp 3 phase on 110V. I tried pretty hard to figure out a way but I couldn't. (you can run 1.5hp single phase though)
Just ordered the Gen 4 Revolution grinder kit from Brian House at Housemade. The build it yourself kit comes with laser cut parts that requires a NEMA 56C motor frame. I am stuck at 110v service for the next few years until I can upgrade service in my garage. I'm looking around for 1-1.5hp motors after having searched around and reading here. I want to use a budget VFD for the first while then upgrade later (plan to keep the VFD and motor for a disc grinder later). Looking for recommendations for a Canadian motor supplier. I got an Iron Horse 1.5hp motor and a WEG CFW 300 VFD from automation direct with free shipping. If you want to run a vfd with a 1.5hp motor youll need 110v 20amp breaker, if your breaker is rated lower you'll be capped at 1hp I believe. Maybe give automation direct a call and let them know what your power situation is. @Dale&Cameron I got my 2HP WEG in 2018. Still running great. Got it from https://www.emotorsdirect.ca/ In 2018 it was $25.00 flat rate shipping in Canada. This side of the border with tons of options.
