    Hello,

Ive been always wanted to try knife making and now that my Son wants to get into the hobby its time to get going.

I have been lurking on this and other forums for information, looking for equipment and supplies.
Trying to see waht has worked for folks and what pitfalls to avoid, we would rather buy something once than purchase something we would grow out of quickly.

We will be taking a class with Ed Storch later in March, but would like to get some more information under our belt before we go.

Wondering if there are any clubs or gatherings in the Edmonton area where we could get more information before we begin our adventure.

This should be fun as I havent been able to sharpen a knife to save my life, now we are going to give a go at building them!

    Take Care,
    Ted and Dan

    Welcome to the lunacy.

It's a fun ride, filled with learning and developing new skills. The best part is that you are making something you can hold in your hand, that is useful, that you have crafted and can be proud of.

Fortunately, this forum has a lot of experienced makers that generously answer questions.

I don't think there is a greater Edmonton knifemaking club per se, but now is a great time to start thinking about just that.

Let us know how it's coming along. Best of luck!

    Dan

Welcome to CKM! Glad you made the transition from lurker to member.

As you've already seen by now, we've got a really good group here, always ready to answer questions about setup, tools, technique, materials, and all.

Your class will definitely get you on the right path. I don't know of any clubs in Edmonton, but maybe some of our AB members can give you more info.

... doh! Damn that Dan and his fast typing....

Great to have you and your son join in the fun, Ted. This is a great forum for Canucks and anyone else who has an interest in knives. There aren't any formal Edmonton clubs that I'm aware of, but the current president of the Western Canada Knife Association (WCKA)is a fellow named Gerry Kievit in Sherwood Park right next door to you. The WCKA is putting together an onformal get-together for knifemakers in Stettler this Summer. Great place to make contacts!

Also, I coordinate the Metal Art Show and Sale at the Reyhnolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin every September. This event brings out quite a few knifemakers from all over western Canada, including Ed Storch who has been participating at this event since I first started it in 2012. I'm a hobbyist knifemaker myself and took the first formative steps under Ed's tutelage back in 2007 (I think, been a while).

Let me know if you want more info on any of the above!
