My 5th (real) knife. 5/32" CPM154 tapered tang, with stabilized spalted maple scales, mosaic pins and red spacers. 8.75" OA with a 3.75" blade.

I am looking for a way to do a satin or matt blade finish. The mirror thing is so hard to keep presentable.

On to the Mother's Day present, then the light box, so the sheath for this little guy will have to wait.

    Thanks for looking,

    Dan

No, not making mosaic pins yet. Too many other things on my plate, but I can see that coming down the road.

Very nice Dan, love the spalted maple... As far as the Matt/satin finish has any one tried ferric chloride on stainless? I thought maybe that would do it with a light soak?

    Steve,

If it's something I could brush on that would be great. I am past the point of taking the scales off. If Rob would post a photo of his $5 lightbox, I could make one and get some good shots with the DSLR.

Rob, are you tempting me? Did you make those yourself? Vacuum pump and polyester resin?

Awesome knife and I love the wood Dan.

Steve. Here are a couple pics of a cheap China stainless that ended up in ferric chloride just before the scrap pile. I actually took them out of the pile to get these pics. Lol. One side was nail polish and the other was wax for the design. Had it in the ferric chloride for about 1.5 hrs. Probably would have been a better satin finish if it was in for a shorter time.

im willing to bet dan that rob made those , in a past posting rob was talking about coloring epoxy with oil base acrylic paint for pins . im thinking he got all that stuff at the hobby shop on dillworth and hwy 97 lol .it looks pretty easy to do with a hand vacuum pump and some rubber tube and epoxy as seen on you tube .i knew it was only time before you tried to make your own , im thinking by the weekend you will have some made up lol. and yes i would also like to see his light box , as the pics are down already . later guys

feel like I'm being followed LOL !!! yup homemade, pretty much any mosaic making hardware can be obtained from your local hobby store and Princess Auto........
but it's like stabalizing your own wood, most knifemakers try it but soon realize they'd rather spend their time making knives.......sorry Dan the knife light box is missing in action , my cat used it for a nap one day and since then I think my wife thought I didn't need it !! I can not find it for the life of me .........
for what it's worth I'm preferring natural outdoor light for photos now......I think Cal made a fancy schmancy light box
