Custom knife maker asked me to come up with sheath for a "unique" knife design they make from time to time and incorporate the logo skull from their website on the sheath.
Wow. The detail on your engraving is amazing. I've made sheaths for all the knives I've made, but their just plain. I've started reading different articles and how to videos on engraving leather and am planning on attempting it but just some basic designs, nothing like you've done cause designs like that are definitely way beyond me.
I couldn't do that either when I started. Just practice and learning from books. Books are much better in my opinion. Easy to refer to them as you are working. The detail in the carving is almost all done by hand with what are referred to as modeling tools. Basically hand modeling tools for leather. Anyone doing work like this should have a set of modelers in the tool drawer. Even simple designs can add a lot to the look of a sheath. See my Fish Bone post. Minimal tools needed. If you decide to take the plunge and have a simple design in mind to start, send it to me and I would be happy to help you with it. Also, If you are near a Tandy Leather store, they often do teaching sessions for free or very low cost.
Thanks Eric, I appreciate that. Don't have a Tandy store real close, but have been wanting to get to one to check it out. Wife mentioned maybe going to Barrie Christmas shopping, and could and I'll go then and have a look around. Yeah I did see fish bone. That looks really cool as well.
