This is the start of a sword I am making. 22" Damascus steel hunting sword blade. I have a moose antler crown I'll carve into a handle, and I am casting my own crossbar and pommel. I have a picture of the mould for the crossbar here too.

The tip of the blade is very chisel-like, and I want it rounded. I will grind / file that down into a more curved shape, then resharpen the edge.

The tang is about 4 inches. I will be epoxying it into the hilt, then pinning it in place. To cover the pin, I will be making a pewter cross and inserting it into the hilt.

Lastly the scabbard will be pine, and covered in leather. I am going to carve the leather with a pattern, or use studs. That I have not decided yet. I will be casting my own locket and chape for the scabbard too.

Ambitious? Perhaps. But it will be an awesome showpiece that might just sell.

Cool! What are you going to cast the crossbar and pommel out of?

Pewter. I am going to put in a 14 gauge steel plate inside the crossbar.

The pewter is nice and heavy too so it will work well as a counterbalance.

No - I do not have the resources...yet. This one was ordered from a blacksmith in Pakistan.

Cast the pewter crossguard and pommel. This is the crossguard. Still needs some filing and polishing. [IMG]

Very cool. Do you have a forge and little crucible to melt the pewter?

Plumbers torch, stainless steel milk dispenser, and vice grips. Was playing with copper today to try to hammer a pipe into a plate. Need two torches. One's not enough. Pretty low tech around here.

Arg! Casting looks like junk. Not happy at all. Bought a 440C flat bar to make a crossguard from. I'll make pewter conchos and mount them instead. Working with the sander Friday. Maybe we'll get more luck there.
