Thought this may be of interest to some of the makers here. I completed this knife for the CKG show last weekend.
I have been researching old methods of decorating sword blades and fittings. Three methods that were used to obtain a blue/black finish consisted of hot sand, charcoal and rust blueing. Each of these provides a different effect. Sand and charcoal blueing involves heat soaking the steel for several hours. The slightest amount of contamination in the packing material will result in a flawed finish. Because of this it took several attempts to achieve an even finish on the panels of this knife. For each attempt I had to sand off the finish and re-polish the steel. Given the amount of sanding required to remove the finish, I am confident that it will stand up well to normal handling. It It is interesting to note that the colour will change depending on the angle that it is viewed from.
I will be using these new (for me) finishes in some of my upcoming new designs.

That is the perfection I hope I can come close to some day. I'm glad I was able to see it in person.
