Hi, I'm wondering if someone can help me identify this leather. Here's a close up of the texture. It's black on both sides. I don't know if it was dyed or if it is the natural color. It's quite nice. I'm thinking of using some in a sheath. It probably would look nice. I'm wondering how durable it might be.
Its Ray skin, like off a sting ray. Its supposed to be very abrasion resistant but quite thin typically so is best as inlays or overwraps as opposed to a stand alone sheath material.
Sting ray it is. Very tough and very expensive according to another forum I checked with. I should look great as an inlay. You should be able to back it with a thicker leather to make a full sheath from it.
Right on guys, thanks. I seen somewhere a katana that had some under the wrapping on the handle and it would show through a little bit, it was quite nice. Thanks again!
