Hi Everyone, I'm very new to knife making and looking for a source for metal that won't break my little bank. The first thing I was considering was a blade from a skill saw. Would anyone know if the metal is all the same across the blade ?
Depends on the saw blade. If it's a carbide tip blade, then most of the metal is likely unsuitable. Even if it's not, making a knife from old saw blades, leaf springs, etc., is best left until you have a good bit of experience. It isn't as simple as cutting a blade shape out of an old skill saw blade and is never as cheap as you think. You'll be a whole lot happier if you buy proper blade steel right off. Check out Rob's site at Knifemakers.ca You can pick up 1084 for under a dollar an inch. It's easy to work with and easy to heat treat.
Thanks, that's what I suspected. I went to Metal Mart today to get some advice on some different blade metals, but their closed for the Holiday's. l would like to try making a couple small Chef knives for my daughters from 154CM steel. I know I need to learn lots and was pretty happy when I found this site. l made a micerta handle for a old Mora knife that was to be a trial run for the handles last night. I used some neon pink and black para cord for the wrap and I must say I think they'll love it.
My first taste of knife making was a bought blade that I put a handle on. i was instantly addicted. Show us a pic. I am pretty sure I'm not the only one that wants to see it.
I never thought about taking pictures. I just unwrapped it last night and I think it looks pretty good. I'll take some photos of the next steps and post them in the projects forum in a couple days.
