This is actually one of my knives from my first batch. It has been about 95% finished for a couple months now but with the wedding and now all of the home renovations I have been doing lately I haven't had time to work on any knives lately. I took a few hours the other day to do the final finishing so that it would be ready for today. The plan from the beginning was to give it to my father in law. The cool thing about it is that he picked everything about it without even knowing that it is even going to be his. Whenever he would stop by I would have him hold it and tell me how it feels and if I should change anything or what kind of handle material I should use because "I can't make up my mind". Well here it is with nickel silver pins and bolsters and black palm scales. I will attempt to make a sheath for it when I get some time and he will have to bring it by for my mark when I find my stencils.(Wife moved them and doesn't remember where)hwell: I also tried to step up my photography. I bought one of those studio in a bag things. Let me know what you guys think and thanks for looking and hope all you fathers out there had a good fathers day!
That knife looks really good Icho! I'm sure he will be proud to have it The black palm looks super cool I might have to try to find some soon! Did you have to order the nickel silver from the states?
Looks great....nice work I really like the look of the black palm and the red/white liners really set it off!!!
Thanks guys. My favorite thing about the black palm is the end grain. Yes Jules I did get the nickel silver from the states. No one around here sells it that I know of.
Looks good Icho !! one of the first knives I made was with black palm !! father in law will be proud of your work !!
That knife is a real beauty. Love the palm handles. If your father-in-law doesn't like it, I've got an address you can send it to.... The photos look good. Having proper lighting really makes a difference. The red background might be a bit strong -- the steel sometimes disappears in it.
Just wondering... are you considering adopting any extra fathers??? I'm available if you are! Great looking knife... well done!
Thanks Brad but there are a couple places that I wasn't totally happy with. There is a slight gap between the bolster and blade on one side and the liners are not touching the bolster on one side. I didn't notice until I was pretty much done profiling the handle. It is not really bad but I know it is there. Sorry Myth. You're out of luck this time. He loved it.LOL I know what you mean about the steel disappearing. One of the pics looked like the steel was red and a part of the fabric. The reviews on the studio thing I got said that the lights are not bright enough and I think I may agree so that is another thing I will experiment with when I get some time. I know what you mean Jules. There is one place here in Ontario that I could get it but it is about double the price and It actually has a Jantz sticker on it. 1 sheet of liner material is 5x more than getting it from Jantz. Crazy! Thanks Rob. I really like the look of black palm. I would like to get a thick piece so that I can get some diagonal cuts off of it to see what it would look like. Daddy? LOL Thanks Rob. BTW I got the belts and blade today. I now have an excellent supply of belts and thanks for the extra.
You will never be 100% happy if your anything like me. I can always find a flaw in my own work, I think it is the nature of building stuff with your hands.
