This question has been talked about before on the web but I heard yes and no. Is a 1hp motor powerful enough for a kmg? Iam just wwondering if the ones that say you need 2 or 3hp go by the theory that you can never have enough power or if it is really necessary. I say on a YouTube video the guy using a 1hp harbor freight motor and he couldn't stall it out. I want to order a motor and vfd this week but don't want to get bigger than necessary obviously cause of cost but I also don't want to cheap out and regret it later.

    Here's what i'm considering.

    And

    Also a 6" drive wheel.

Does anyone or has anyone used a 1Hp motor and how was it. I would love to hear any and all input. Thanks.

This is just my opinion. I would think that one horse would be fine. Sure more power could hog more but for a knife maker like you and me I bet it would be good. My dad has a 10" table saw that's got a 1 horse 1725 WEG and its got plenty of power. We built guitars and cut a lot of fairly thick hardwood with it. I'm going with 1.5 horse simply because I can get it for so cheap. Again that's just my 2cents I'm not speaking from any belt grinder experience.

I am currently running a 1hp on my 2x72 and it works for me. With that being said, if I had to buy another motor I would most certainly go bigger. The largest factor is what size of steel you plan to grind and how hard you want to hog, as well as whether you will be hogging on a platen or contact wheel. A platen takes more power due to friction on the back side of the belt. When I am hogging On my platen i can bog my one horse but not stall it out.

Thanks for the offer r-ice. Unfortunately it is at least 4 hrs away but I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks guys for the input. I am thinking I will get the 115v in VFD and tha 1hp 220v 3ph ac motor. Not set in stone yet but I'm hoping to get it settled today. I will probably order the 6" drive wheel also.
