9" Disc Sander And/ Or Surface Grinder Attachment For 2x72

    Question for you guys, both needed? Or just one? Both are roughly the same cost.

    The reason I ask is both can grind the flats on a knife, changing the grit can get the desired finish, and both will have variable speed.

    Any pros or cons you may have thought of for either of these pieces of equipment.

    I know the surface grinder can remove precision amounts of steel, and be angle adjusted to taper tangs for instance. But if you can put a distil taper on the pointy part of the knife, there no reason you can't taper a tang by hand also! Will the disc sander put a superior finish on the blade?

    Let me know your thoughts on these things, as you can tell I am on the fence again for which will take my dollar$!

    I think it comes down to what your need is. If you are forging your own damascus or using stock that isn't true, a surface grinder will help make your blanks flat and even. A lap wheel attachment is also great for cleaning up blanks and ensuring a nice flat side on bolsters and handle material. Both of them can also ruin a good blade if you don't use them properly.

    In the end, choosing the tools isn't as important as getting good with them.

    Both as there place in my shop. Surface grinder gets used to clean up steel blanks and take them all to the same thickness couldn’t live without it today.
    Disc grinder gets used for handles and making things square or cutting angles for handles glue ups. I probably could get by without a disc grinder but it do make life a lot easier. It all depends on what you do in your shop and what you use.
    You can get a pretty cheap disc grinder that will work. Or built one .
    Surface grinder is more $$$$$$
    If I only used Nitro v steel I wouldn’t need a surface grinder very clean steel.
    Z wear or Elmax I would cry if I didn’t have one .lol:)

    I handn't even thought about 'dirty' steels, up until now I guess I've been spoiled by only using precision ground O1.

    So Nitro-V is clean like O1, any other steels come like that?

    I am finding a lot of uses for the disc grinder, especially when making bolster and handle pieces nice and flat.

    AEB-L is pretty clean as far as scale goes, as is Nitro-V. Some suppliers offer cutlery steels in a few different finishes, mill, Blanchard and precision. Mill finish is all I ever buy. Save $$. However those saved dollars do come with spent time. With some steel like CPM the scale is pretty thick and you have to take a fair bit off to get through it and any surface inclusions. Mill finished steel is thicker to accommodate for this surface grinding. So when you put your caliper on some 1/8" stock it's not 0.125" as expected. It's more like 0.145" to allow you to chew through the 20 thousandths and end up with 0.125" when your are done. I would really like a surface grinding attachment, but have managed to get by without one until now. There's still room for dreaming in my shop.

    I have had a 12" disc grinding plate on the shelf since forever and never got around to putting a motor and table together for it. But the idea of attaching to my 2x72 grinder sounds intriguing, time to put both brain cells to work and figure this out
